Public Land Survey System (PLSS) Map

The above map is an example of a PLSS map.  A PLSS map, also know as Public Land Survey System map.  To understand what a PLSS map is one must first understand what the Public Land Survey System is.   “The Public Land Survey System (PLSS) is a way of subdividing and describing land in the United States.  The PLSS is used to divide public domain lands, which are lands owned by the Federal government for the benefit of the citizens of the United States.”  The map above shows the states included in the PLSS as well as the principal meridians and base lines located in those states.
