The above map is an example of a PLSS map. A PLSS map, also know as Public Land
Survey System map. To understand
what a PLSS map is one must first understand what the Public Land Survey System
is. “The Public Land Survey System (PLSS) is a way of subdividing and
describing land in the United States.
The PLSS is used to divide public domain lands, which are lands owned by
the Federal government for the benefit of the citizens of the United
States.” The map above shows the
states included in the PLSS as well as the principal meridians and base lines
located in those states.
